He lives off the land and has found peace in his tranquil surroundings. Then he gets a surprise visit from his brother, Peter, and he’s not happy about it. Dean urges Peter to leave him alone, but his brother insists on staying and reveals a disturbing truth – he has a brain tumor and perhaps only days or hours to live. Before long though, it becomes clear he also wants to tell Dean another secret about the past, about the murder of their father, which led Dean to disappear out here in the middle of nowhere.

A Miner Lie

A comedy feature

A failed entrepreneur returns to the mining town where he grew up and convinces several old friends to stage a mine collapse and pretend they’re trapped, so they can become media sensations, and rake in millions from book and TV deals.

The town of Lugnerburg is a Pennsylvania hamlet that has been hard hit by an economic downturn and its reliance on a local coalmine. Returning for his mom’s funeral, perpetual entrepreneur Mickey is welcomed home by his brother Brett, but few other locals are pleased to see him because he fleeced them with his silly money-making ideas. But when Mickey sees the media frenzy surrounding some miners who were trapped after a mine collapse in San Marcos, he comes up with his wildest scheme yet. Those miners have been lavished with book and TV deals, rumored to be around $100m, so Mickey suggests to his brother and closest friends that they fake being trapped in the Lugnerburg mine. An Old Timer has long rambled about a secret entrance to the mine, which they subsequently use to sneak out while rescuers attempt to reach them. Once they’ve become a media sensation, they will hurry back into the mine just in time to be rescued and become millionaires. It is, they agree, a brilliant plan. So what could go wrong?
